A Little Bit Mongolian

Commissioned in 2009 for the 70th Anniversary of the Australian Boy’s Choir, Directed by Noel Ancell,  A Little Bit Mongolian is written about Australian boy Angus Paradice from Scone NSW, who in the Mongolian summer of 2008, at 12 years of age, became the first non-Mongolian in history to compete in one of the world’s oldest sporting events, the Naadam Horse Festival.

The piece premiered In Melbourne Recital Hall and was inspired by music from Paul’s soundtrack to the Internationally acclaimed documentary of the same name, directed by renowned film maker Mike Dillon. The movie has won five awards.

Some of the music is Inspired by gingo chants sung by the Mongolian families as they prepare to ride their horses in the lead up to the Naadam Festival. Other featured melodies in the piece are the praise song to Chingis Khan and the praise Song to Bogd Dunjingarav.

It is a tradition for all children to sing to their horses and as race day arrives, the sky is filled with hundreds of enchanting melodies.

This is an excerpt from the film soundtrack.

Lyrics

I can ride, I can win
Let me try, I can fly

Riding tall, riding high
Riding strong, riding free
Riding beyond my fear
I’m riding to my dream
