Sapere Aude

Sapere Aude was commissioned by Wesley College Melbourne in 2016 as the Sesquicentenary Anthem, under the direction of Margaret Arnold.

Based on the schools motto “Sapere Aude” or “Dare to be Wise”, Paul also visited the College to meet staff and students and get a taste of this bustling and vibrant school community.

The piece acknowledges the opportunities given to the students as they prepare to embrace the  wider the world.

Lyrics

S A P E R E A U D E

By Paul Jarman & Bonnie Nilsson

Another day begins
We step inside and breathe it all in
There’s a world here to explore
And in this world we’ll grow
To live and to learn to be all we know
In this world

Another year goes by
Many lessons taught to inspire minds
Here we come to listen and learn
And if these walls could talk
Imagine the wealth of knowledge they hold
In these walls

But it doesn’t end here
These walls have many doors
So look inside, we’re taught to try them all
So you and I, side by side
Like those before, we stand with pride
It’s time to leave our stories in these walls

Sapere Aude, dare to be wise
Sapere Aude, it’s our time

And in this changing world and with our changing lives
We’ll take these lessons learned within these walls
And as the sun shines bright through our angel wings
We’ll fly beyond these walls; it’s our time
