The Southport School 2010 – Band of Brothers

Band of Brothers is a true example of just how much a song can touch an entire community. What began as a commissioned work for the school choir at this respected school for boys in the Gold Coast has become not just the school anthem but a deeply important part of the whole school philosophy, marketing and day to day life at the school.

Paul researched the schools passionate commitment to the memory of the old boys who lost their lives in the Great War, WWII and the Vietnam War. The school had a particularly strong history in the Great War, with 75% of the school population enlisting. 55 of these boys did not survive. The school chapel, built in their honour, has a name of every boy who served, and in the memorial room, every day a page of a book is turned with a new name and face of another fallen old boy.

The school wanted to honour their sacrifice and to inspire in their students the importance of acknowledging that in their light, we can all be better men.

Paul’s song delivered to the school something that they were never expecting. The lyrics and poignant melody united the school in something they had never seen before and to this day, tears flow at every singing. It is the part of the heart and soul of TSS.
